It was a beautiful day out in the Pridelands that morning, and Nyarai was not the kind of lioness to waste such perfect weather. The sun was shining bright, the grass was still green, and there was a gentle breeze. Seeing as there wasn't anything else to do at Pride Rock, Nyarai had decided to sneak off to her favorite little spot; the Water Hole.
The task was rather easy as her small size and timid nature allowed her to hide in the background and get out unseen, as far as she knew at least. After that it was a simple little jog to the Water Hole, and she was good to go. The first thing, of course, that she had to do was get a drink of water to refresh herself after her little jog, and a few laps of water later she felt better.
Since that was over and done with, her next task was to get herself comfortable. The bright sun overhead was perfect for sunbathing, and the den was always a little chilly at night. Even on the run here she felt warm and cozy, the sun warming up her light-tan fur. The nearby rocks provided a perfect spot to lay upon, and with little to not effort, Nyarai quickly jumped onto them and settled down.
It was perfect up there. The sun was beating down on her fur, giving Nyarai that warm, cozy feeling she so loved. Between the Water Hole and the gentle breeze, the atmosphere was cool enough to prevent overheating. Crossing her paws in front of her, Nyarai laid her head down on them and closed her eyes, hoping to fully experience the comfort. Within moments, her breathing became harder as she faded off to a peaceful sleep.

Rafiki was taking a morning stroll to the water hole, a calm smile gracing his pleasant old face. Wise brown eyes scanned his surroundings, nodding his head at the few other beings he saw there. A zebra mare approached him, and they made idle conversation for a moment - of course, idle conversation for Rafiki had a lot to do with saying crazy things in Swahili and leaping around. It was hard to think that he was actually getting any older. Across the water hole, he saw the small sleeping lioness. Ahh, darling Nyarai. He didn't want to wake her, so he'd wait until she woke from her nap to go talk to her.

Nyarai's nap had been rather pleasant so far. The sun warming her fur, the cool mist and breeze to keep her from overheating, and the rocks were surprisingly comfortable (then again, she did sleep in Pride Rock which was, well, a giant rock). She probably would have stayed like that all day if she could. However, even in her sleep she kept a constant vigil, and the sound of movement caused her to awake, if just for a second.
Fearing a predator, she was ready to dash away, but kept her eyes closed in hopes they might go away. Most predators didn't bother to attack a lion, even if they were asleep. Concentrating like she had been taught, she started to listen for any and all movement she could hear. The swaying of the grass was a bit distracting, but there was definite movement in there. And it sounded as if it was getting closer every second.
That's it, I am out of here she thought as she leaped up from the rock and started to dash out.
She stopped in her tracks, however, as she almost ran into that crazy monkey (of some sort) Rafiki. Her heart almost burst with the speed that it began to slow down, glad to see it wasn't something trying to kill her that was out here. Just a lunatic...yeah, that wasn't much better.
"Good morning Rafiki." she said, a little nervous in case he decided to inform Kovu or the others of her sneaking off to be lazy like this.

The eccentric old mandrill put his hands on either side of Nyarai's face, smiling as big as he possibly could and exclaiming, "A lazy fly cannot have a taste of a fresh wound! Where is your head, girl?"
He laughed his signature Rafiki laugh and patted her between the ears before hanging upside-down from his tail off of the nearest small tree. The monkey crossed his arms and feigned an angry face as he swung back and forth in his inverted state, before he jumped back down and posed with his head propped up on his handpaw beside the water hole.
"I'm sorry if I woke you."

Before she could escape from him, Nyarai found her face imprisoned in Rafiki's hands. She really didn't enjoy having others touch her like that, and considering how, uh, 'eccentric' this guy was suppossed to be, it doubled the uncomfortableness. If he just hadn't had such a tight grip, she would have probably tried to bite him. Instead, she was forced to listen in complete confusion as the monkey rambled about fly's and fresh wounds.
When he finally let go, she took a deep breath of relief and watched as he ran around like a maniac. In what seemed like mere seconds he was on a tree, glaring at her. She backed up a little, ashamed to an extent that she had been caught like this (it took her a moment, but she had an idea what he meant about that fly stuff), but watched as he lightened up and moved over to the water.
"No, no, it's alright, I probably needed to be woken up anyways. I really shouldn't have been out here sunbathing anyways," she responded meekly, not keeping eye contact with him for a moment.
After that she glanced over at him, "You aren't going to tell anybody I was here goofing off, are you?" she continued, sounding a bit more worried this time.
She really didn't need everybody knowing she'd rather go off sunbathing than to actually help around the place. Well, that wasn't really true, but that was what everybody would think at least.

Once again, Rafiki laughed. Hysterically. After maybe half a minute of his laughter, he stopped very promptly and sat up. "I won't tell anybody if you don't. I goof off all the time, it's what I do. It's what I'm doing right now." He shrugged and grinned at the lioness, dipping a cupped hand into the water and taking a sip. Truly, he could have been off doing whatever shamanistic, important thing that a mandrill like him was supposed to do, but it was much more fun to bother the lions. And something he found strange; even though he was there when all of them were born, was there when they got their names, watched them grow and learn to hunt - there were some that never remembered poor old Rafiki. It became more depressing as he grew older; he almost felt forgotten sometimes.

Rafiki's laugh made Nyarai a little bit on the uncomfortable side, especially when it started to get rather long. She wished she could just run off, but this monkey was stealthier than any animal in the Pridelands and would be in front of her before she even made a step. So she was forced to sit there and wait for him to calm down some and actually start to talk.
When she heard that he wasn't going to tell because he was goofing off as well, she breathed a sigh of relief. She wasn't going to be in trouble then, unless someone else caught her out here. Of course, now that Rafiki was here she had an easy excuse. All she had to say was "I ran into Rafiki" and everyone would know why she was gone so long. If anybody noticed she was gone in the first place, which she doubted.
Seeing as it didn't seem he'd be smacking her with his stick or anything, Nyarai climbed back onto her rock and laid down again. She obviously wasn't going to drift off to sleep since, well, he probably would smack her then, but she could at least lay down while she talked.
"So what brought you down to the Water Hole anyways?" she asked, though she wasn't sure if that was the best way to start a conversation with this guy. He always liked to talk in riddles and never give a straight answer.

Rafiki held his toes and wrapped his bent tail around his shaman stick, which he had set down beside him. Once again, he laughed his good-spirited laugh. "You are a baboon and I am not! Why would one come to the water hole? Heeheeeheeee!" If he hadn't been so lazy that morning, Nyarai would probably have gotten a smack to the head. It was common knowledge that the water hole was just as it seemed; a place to quench your thirst and turn over the thought of the day in your head. Rafiki began to make a rolling motion with his hands still holding onto his toes, and subsequently did a backwards somersault into the water. Serves him right for teasing Nyarai.

No need for the sarcasm.... Nyarai thought as Rafiki talked. While she wasn't a hundred percent sure what it was he had said, she had a feeling it was something sarcastic. At least the last part was, pointing out there was a reason people came to the Water Hole. Nyarai didn't respond to the comment, however, not wanting to pick a fight with the monkey. So she kept the thought to herself.
Feeling a bit tense, however, she had to stretch. She did a lot, as she always felt tense, but when she was out like this she did it less. With Rafiki around she had a feeling she'd be doing it a lot more often though. Stretching her paws out, her back stretched into the air, she yawned for a second before relaxing and settling back into her own position.
"I guess that was a rather stupid question on my part. I guess I had been thinking there would be another reason, like maybe Kovu or something wanting to talk to you or something. But I guess he'd be here already if he did...." she responded.
She had been looking away when she said that, but the sound of splashing, as well as some water hitting her in the face, was enough for her to look back. Apparently he had fallen into the water, and Nyarai stood up rather fast to help.
"Are you alright there Rafiki?!" she worriedly asked, hoping the guy didn't get hurt.

A cackle came up from the water as Rafiki resurfaced, floating on his back. He listened as she talked to him, contemplating her words. What, is old Rafiki not allowed to come up from his baobab tree without a magnificent reason like meeting new cubs or marrying the lions, something monumental? Although he'd never let on to it, it always hurt his feelings when the lions simply thought of him as some crazy old monkey. Back in the day, he got plenty of respect.
"Oh yeah, yeah, just monkey business. Would you like to go for a swim with me?" He grinned up at the lioness, who seemed sort of uptight around Rafiki. He was sort of unsettling, sure, and he knew it, but it seemed like she could use some Hakuna Matata in her life!

When Rafiki resurfaced and started floating, Nyarai calmed down some and laid back down. She had been scared there for a moment, fearing he might have drowned or something. A rather paranoid and irrational belief since the Water Hole was rather shallow, but that was just how her mind worked. The world was dangerous; you had to be careful or else you could get yourself killed. She learned that long ago, and she hadn't forgotten it yet.
Still a bit shaky, her heart racing a little but calming down, she listened as Rafiki asked her to swim. She shook her head to respond with a no. It was the Water Hole afterall, they had to drink out of it. Actually, Rafiki probably shouldn't be swimming in there earlier but she wasn't going to argue with him on that. He probably would realize it soon; for a loony he was suppossed to be intelligent. Why else would Kovu and Kiara listen to him for advice and give him so much respect?
"I think I'm good for now," she responded.
Not sure what else to do, Nyarai started to lick at her paw to clean it. This was a rather random time to do so, but since sunbathing was out of the question now, and she didn't have anything else to say, it would be a nice distraction till Rafiki did something else or left. And at least she would have done something constructive with this time.
