RAFIKI -the friend- Rafiki was asleep in the great old baobab. Every living thing has a spirit. Baobab trees have spirits, too. Trees to Rafiki represent time, wisdom. Think how much this tree has seen. It has seen the rises and downfalls of the land around it, it has witnessed coldblooded killings and beautiful love stories. It has housed baby birds, it has fed the hooved animals with its leaves. This tree has been here forever and always will be. Even when it dies, there will be a stump remaining. Similarly, animals have souls, and who's to say they don't sometimes interfere with the living world? The sleeping mandrill certainly wouldn't. The stump left behind, in an animal's case, would be its family, friends and everything it touched in its lifetime, because that's the circle of life, and they live on vicariously in everybody and everything they affected. On this night, the spirits were stirring, and although at peace with his chest rising and falling in his slumber, Rafiki could feel it. The tremors of the enchanted baobab tree, the leaves rustling with the blue-tinted wind outside of his hollow. In his dreams, the great Kings were descending down to the grasslands they once called home, placing their royal paws on the starry staircase that lead them up into the sky. Rafiki was the first to sense this rapture. He woke, startled, and felt a chill run up his spine. Taking hold of his staff, he leaned on it and drowsily hobbled out of his hollow tree, glancing around. The leaves and stardust were gathering at his feet with the breeze. Not just a little bit, either. They just kept coming. He would move and they would follow. Rafiki moved left, right, and the entity of leaves and stardust would follow. The mandrill placed his hand on his hip and leaned on his staff. "Mmmufasa! Why are you waking me up? A monkey needs his beauty sleep just as much as a spirit does!"He didn't get a response. No whispers in his ear, nothing. He looked up to the sky and his eyes widened. The crazy simian began to scream and run out into the savanna night, leaves at his feet as if they were carrying him. "SIMBA! SIMBA! LIONS, WAKE UP! YOU FEEL DEM SPIRITS?!"His voice would carry to Pride Rock through the stillness of the night as he ran toward it frantically.

He lives in you, & he lives in mehe watches over everything we see - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Rafiki was right; there were spirits about that night, and lots of them. Simba stretched his legs, he hadn't been out in the living world in a while. Sure, he looked down on it up from the sky, but that hardly compared to being able to stretch his legs on living ground.
Most of the lions that were gone didn't come back to the living world, atleast not in such a..solid form. Simba looked exactly how he had before dying; the only difference was he was faded, you could see through him.
He found it more interesting to come back like this; it was more straightforward. More to the point, and that was what he liked, getting straight to the point. Most of the other lions didn't even come back in ANY form. They preferred to live their lives, and then when they died stay dead up in the clouds. He wasn't like that; there was no resting after death for him. He still worried about his family, and wanted to watch over them. He had to make sure they stayed safe.
That was the reason why Simba was there right then. He wanted to warn Kovu. There was something...off..about Valerius, the cub he'd watched his son-in-law take in. He didn't quite know what it was, but he felt weird about the cub. He wanted to tell Kovu to keep his eyes on him. He was about to go off and look for him, when he'd heard Rafiki.
Simba was crouching behind the brush, waiting for Rafiki to come closer. He wanted to jump out and surprise him. He heard the crazy old mandrill before he saw him.
"SIMBA! SIMBA! LIONS, WAKE UP! YOU FEEL DEM SPIRITS?!"
Simba chuckled to himself; that nutty monkey hadn't changed a bit. He jumped out from behind the brush.
"Yeah, Rafiki! Hearing you louuuud and clear!"

Night time, such a peaceful time to be alive. It was even better than the sunrise, though that was mostly because at night you actually had an excuse to sleep. As usual Nyarai was laying comfortably in the den of Pride Rock, a little ways off from everybody else. Her family was nearby, but now that she was an adult lioness they had felt she needed to be off on her own. A little harsh yes, but she couldn't be their child forever right?
No matter the situation, Nyarai was comfortable and sleeping peacefully. Oddly enough, for a lioness that was afraid of her own shadow, she dealt rather well with the darkness. Probably because it was easier to hide in the dark than in the middle of the afternoon. That, and usually night=sleep. She wasn't restless at all, not afraid of every little sound and noise. It was probably the only time that Nyarai was not jumpy and nervous. Which was a good thing because if she was, she'd never sleep, and that was never a good thing.
As she slept, however, there was this faint sound in the air. At first it had no effect, but as time went on it got louder and louder until finally she could make out the words of the phrase...and it forced her wide awake. Nyarai was rather quick about it, almost immediately getting up to see what the problem was. Normally there wasn't talking in the middle of the night, so to have words being heard was rather disturbing.
Looking around, Nyarai tried to find the source of the speaking. But there was nobody else awake from what she could see, and no one was sleep talking (if that was an actual condition). Was it some kind of ghost doing the talking? Was Pride Rock haunted? The voices were talking about spirits afterall.
Normally she'd freak at the thought, but Nyarai didn't want to wake anybody up. Besides, if they heard the voices they'd be waking up soon anyway so it wasn't her job. Instead, she sunk low to the ground, scooting a little bit closer to the rest of her family for comfort, and, with her eyes wide open and body shaking, waited for something else to happen.

Rafiki flipped out! Arms raised, eyes wide, yelling unintelligable things in Swahili and laughing his red ass off, the medicine monkey lost it. The leaves and stardust were like magnets to his feet, with that strange blueish wind like transluscent swallows accompanying them.
The spirit of the great king leapt from the bushes - and Rafiki's first reaction was to whack him on the head with his medicine stick, as if it was perfectly normal to see a spirit. He seemed to have forgotten, though, that spirits are elusive to touch. The staff fell right through Simba's spirit.
"SIIIMBA! Why you got to go on leaving me like dat? What're you doing down here? Karibu tena, my friend!" Rafiki's whole face was a smile, loving the company of his friend, even if he's a spirit. It's not like Rafiki hasn't dealt with those before. "Come and meet your pride! Is there danger?"The mandrill had a million questions at once.

Filled with hope & filled with pridewe are more than we are, we are one - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -Up on PrideRock, the king was sleeping. Alright, now the song "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" is going to start playing in your head now, right? I know, it happened to me while writing this. Anyway. In the den, Kovu was sleeping next to his queen Kiara. However, something was off. His face was twisted up a bit, and he was growling low. This was the sign of a nightmare. Inside his head, he saw his daughter Riora running along with Valerius near the waterhole. He was watching from on a high rock, a smile on his face, his emerald eyes gleaming. Something was off. Something went wrong. The sky dimmed and went black, and he saw Riora's face twist up in horror. Valerius laughed cynically, and he raised a paw, claws unsheathed. Riora tried to run, and he screamed. "RIORA! NO!" Down he leapt through the rocks, running as fast as he could. However, Valerius swept his paw down, crashing it against her face...
"NO!" Kovu jumped up, alert, awake. He was panting like he went on a long run, and his ears were twitching vigorously. His claws were unsheathed, and he glanced towards Kiara. She was sleeping, soundly. Blinking a few times, he yawned and got up, stretching. He wondered why he had that nightmare, and his insides were shivering. The sun wasn't even up yet or close to being up, as he peered out of the den. A few moments of silence passed before he heard the old monkey scream from the Tree.
Off he went, racing down the rocks. He didn't bother to wake the others; many days have passed. He ran constantly, growing, practically exercising to make himself big. This was because he wanted to protect his pride with everything he had. On the ground, he pushed himself, his muscles flexing and bulging with each paw touching the ground. Shortly, he reached the tree, but had to stop short.
Simba?
First he saw the monkey, then Nyarai. Next, his emerald eyes landed on Simba. "Simba...?" His tone of voice was soft, low. His father, why was he here? Taking a few paw steps forward, his eyes were wide and his ears erect. His tail was up a bit, and everything around him dimmed. It seemed only him and Simba were there, alone. "Why are you here, Simba? What's wrong?" Such easy words to be seeing your now undead father-in-law, right?

► Hunter of the Day ◄***Vitani opened one lazy eye at the commotion. She saw Nyarai bolt upright, staring at something outside of Priderock with a stunned expression. Vitani stretched and yawned, showing all her sharp teeth. What was going on? She leapt to her paws and peered out of the rock. The first thing she noticed was Kovu, tail lashing and ears alert. Then she noticed Rafiki, the insane monkey dancing around, bobbing his stick. And then there was another lion, pelt shimmering in the moonlight, the lion she had been trained to hate since she was born...
...Simba? She took another step and blinked. Yes, it was Simba! The great king of the past had come down from the sky! She gasped in astonishment and quickly closed her mouth. Why was Simba here? What was going on?! She leapt down from Priderock and stood a little ways behind Kovu, still looking at Simba in what could only be described as awe.***

He lives in you, & he lives in mehe watches over everything we see - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Simba laughed hysterically at his crazy friend's reaction. Rafiki has always been completely insane, but in the completely logical and...sane way. That didn't make sense, but it didn't have to. Anyone who knew Rafiki well knew EXACTLY what Simba was talking about.
"SIIIMBA! Why you got to go on leaving me like dat? What're you doing down here? Karibu tena, my friend!"
Simba laughed again. How old was Rafiki by now? He'd outlived just how many generations of Pridelanders? Oh man, he didn't even know. "Not all of us are invincible, immortal creatures, Rafiki. You're just lucky." Simba grinned, joking around with him. He purposely avoided the last question. He didn't need to go into that just at the moment unless asked specifically. He didn't want to ruin this happy reunion. Simba was thrilled to have his friend again; he'd missed Rafiki while up in the spirit lands. It could get pretty lonely up there sometimes, just watching down on his living family. "Come and meet your pride! Is there danger?" He tried not to show his discomfort at the question. Danger. Danger. Yeah, there was danger. But he couldn't go into that right now. Well, not that he couldn't, but he didn't want to. But he had been directly asked, and he wouldn't lie to his friend, putting him in more danger. However, he was saved by the interruption from Kovu and Vitani. "Why are you here, Simba? What's wrong?" Everyone wanted to know what was wrong, what was going on. He couldn't just be visiting his family? But no, Kovu was right. His son in law was right. Kovu had a strange look in his eye. He couldn't quite explain it. And then, Vitani came up with Kovu as well. The look in her eyes was one of awe, of shock. His heart filled with love and pride towards his extended family. He had to tell them the truth, he couldn't lie to them. He loved them. He turned to Kovu, looking him straight in the eye. This was for him. How could he explain his uncomfortable feelings about Valerius? He'd seen the cub sneaking into the Outlands, but that could be anything, that could have to do with cub curiousity. But somehow...this was different. "I came to warn you, my son. It's Valerius. There's something off about him; you must be careful, you must watch him. I can't keep my eyes on him all the time." He lowered his eyes towards the ground. His first time back to the living world and it couldn't be a happy affair. But this was life...well, death. Same thing, these days. This was what he had to do as the protector of his family. [/blockquote][/blockquote]

"Not all of us are invincible, immortal creatures, Rafiki. You're just lucky." Rafiki cackled. Heee, hee, hee! We all know the laugh. But he saw something else in his spirit-friend's eyes and quieted down, listening intently to his next words. He pivoted on his heel and threw his arms up in frustration. The act caused the medicine staff to rattle, adding to his gesture. His right hand guided itself to his forehead. Valerius, of course.
"Haba na haba, hujaza kibaba..." Little and little fills the measure.
He had noticed Valerius sneaking past the Baobab to the Outlands before, and Rafiki, being the omniscient monkey, had a vision of the future of this cub - although it was cloudy for now. He plunked down on the grass and turned to face the lions. Ugh. The tweaked tail of Rafiki twitched nervously at the tip.

Nyarai was starting to drift off to sleep again when she heard Kovu jumping up with a loud “NO!”. No one else apparently heard it as they were asleep, but Nyarai sure did, and she ducked down to ground to avoid being seen. He must have had a nightmare or something as instead of listening for the noise he simply went about stretching and yawning. This actually worried Nyarai some as she was quick to assume that if Kovu didn’t hear the voices, then she was starting to go crazy. Her fears were calmed, however, when she watched him run off after the voices, which was enough to convince Nyarai that she wasn’t crazy after all. If the king heard the voices, then something must be there right?
The next to rise was Vitani, who seemed much lazier than Kovu was. She was rather quick to get up, however, and made her way out after Kovu. This left her about the only one awake at this point. She was still debating on whether or not to go after them. On the one hand, the two of them were some of the toughest lions in the Pridelands. If anything happened, they would easily be able to fight it off. On the other hand, it was dark, there were unknown voices, and she had no clue what was going on. That was kind of balancing out the safety of Kovu and Vitani being around.
She decided to go. While she was scared beyond belief, something odd was going on, and she wanted to witness it. Kovu and Vitani could protect her, and she had a feeling that Rafiki might have had something to do with this all. He was rather tough for old, crazy monkey, so hopefully nothing would go wrong. Quietly she stood up, and sneaked through the den to make her way outside. She had quite a bit of practice in this, and was able to easily get through without waking anybody up. Once she was outside, she noticed a crowd of animals a little ways off, and Nyarai soon started to make her way down.
Slinking through the rocks and grass to get close without being seen, Nyarai stopped when she witnessed the sight. There, in front of everybody, was Simba…or at least his spirit. Nyarai’s stomach began to feel nauseous, and she even started to shake. It wasn’t that she feared Simba, but the sight of a spirit was still rather unsettling. One thing didn’t help, though, was the fact that Simba was looking rather serious and distraught about something. Apparently Nyarai must have missed something-important happening, and so she was tempted to just leave. They really didn’t need her presence there; Kovu, Vitani, and Rafiki could handle it.
