It was a day that Nyarai could not simply ignore anymore. She couldn't run or hide, or run off to the watering hole to sunbath. No, this was a day that, whether she wanted to or not, she was going to have to face; her first hunting trip. As a full grown lioness it was her duty to assist in hunting down animals to provide food for the pride. Of course, just because it was duty didn't mean she had to enjoy it.
Now, it wasn't as if Nyarai couldn't hunt. She may be a bit of a coward, but with cowardness came some helpful abilities. Speed (to get away from danger), stealth (to hide from danger), and heightened senses (to notice danger). All of which were important for a hunter. The only problem; Nyarai really didn't have that killer intent a hunter needed. While she knew she would need to kill an animal for food, at the same time she really didn't think it was in her to do so. From birth she had been raised on the whole "Circle of Life" thing and knew it wasn't bad, yet she just didn't think she could run out there, stalk something, and then jump it and strangle it to death.
However, no one was going to accept that, and even she knew that it was a bit silly. Still, she didn't have much confidence in her abilities, which was why she was sulking around Pride Rock trying to track down Kovu or Kiara. Nyarai wasn't going to back out of the hunt; she just wanted to get some reassurance from the leaders of the Pride. Now if they let her off the hook she wouldn't mind, but she truly doubted that would happen. It was her duty afterall.
Looking over her shoulder, she was able to make a quick judgement on time. It was mid morning, early enough that nothing much was going on, but late enough that everybody had taken care of their morning routines like water and breakfast. So Kovu or Kiara had to be around here somewhere. Hopefully they just wouldn't be too busy to talk to a cowardly lion....

Kovu Yawning with a huge gaping mouth, the young king was walking close to the rocks that led up to PrideRock. That dark fur of his was being ruffled by the mid morning breezes. It swept through his black mane, and he shook it out. Today was a good day, no doubt about it. His stomach was full, his mate was out with the other lionesses, his daughter and son was out playing. Zazu did not report any misbehavior in the Savannah. The lionesses were content with how he was running the pride. A sigh escaped him, but it was a relief sigh. He felt like the world was lifted off of his shoulders today, and he enjoyed the feeling.
Did Simba ever feel like this?
Smirking to himself a bit, he was sure he had days like this. This was his very first day where nothing was wrong. Usually the antelopes always went near the Outlands, or the elephants got stuck in mud, or maybe even a small fire. Anything could go wrong. "But not today..." His ears twitched, and he stopped walking for a moment. His gaze followed the birds flying up ahead, them laughing and chirping to each other. Shaking his head, a small smile on his face, he started his journey back to his den, his home.
Yawning again, he unsheathed then sheathed his claws, stretching them out. Even though he felt relieved, he was so used to his kingly duties, and not relaxing days like this. Maybe he should go find Kiara... "Nah. Let her do what she wants today." Mumbling to himself, he took his step on the bottom rock. Ears twitching, he heard some scraping up near his den. Everybody was out, as far as he knew, so a low growl escaped him. Carefully, without a sound, he leapt and bound over the rocks. Finally, he leaped up the last rock, and landed on all paws, his emerald eyes blazing fiercely.
However, he relaxed when he saw the lioness Nyarai. Blinking a few times, he wondered why she wasn't out on her first hunt. "Nyarai... Are you alright?" His voice was low, soothing, and his muscles loosened.

Today was a good day for hunting that was for sure. The weather was nice and warm, a light breeze, and no signs of trouble. Normally Nyarai would be out on the rocks, but she had other business to take care of today. So she was tip-toeing around Pride Rock to track down Kovu for a little bit of a confidence boost. Though she was partially hoping not to find him. Then she might be able to sneak her way out of….
“Nyarai…Are you alright?”
Nyarai jumped at the voice, and quickly turned around. Her heart stopped beating against her rib cage when she saw it was Kovu. She didn’t like being sneaked up on, but there was no way she was ever going to back talk to her king about that. Instead, she bowed down to him for a second before trying to speak to him, though her head was down to the ground. It was a normal habit of hers to do that when she was speaking nervously.
”Uhm, I I’m fine, for the most part. It’s just that, uhm,”
For a split second Nyarai thought of trying to lie about being injured or something, but she knew she couldn’t pull that off. Even slight pressure on her and she would break, and it wasn’t like she could lie anyway. Her voice would give her away, so the only thing to do was tell the truth about her situation.
”I’m rather nervous about my first hunt. I just don’t think I have it in me to actually kill something. I I mean I know I should, I’m a lion after all. I just, oh, I really have no clue what I’m talking about….”
She glanced up at him from her position of looking at the ground, scanning him for any hints of body movements to judge his emotions. While she doubted he’d be mad about it, at the same time she wasn’t sure he wouldn’t be disappointed about her troubles. A lioness was supposed to hunt; it was simply second nature to them. Yet here she was, doubting she could actually pull it off, and she was unloading that thought onto the king himself. Who wouldn’t be disappointed in that situation?

Kovu. The male lion's ears twitched, watching her jump. Did he really sneak up on her? Guilt spread through him; he was being quiet. He didn't know who was up there; everybody was gone. "I'm sorry, Nyarai. I didn't realize you were up here." His left paw raised and scratched behind his head a bit, then he put it back down on the rock. Blinking, he sat down, his tail twitching from side to side.
Did she look nervous?
”Uhm, I I’m fine, for the most part. It’s just that, uhm,” This young lioness before him always interested him; not in that kind of way, mind you. It's just she was different than all of the other ladies. The way she acted, the way she was always away from everybody... It seemed rather peaceful to him. Well, anything was peaceful to him. "Go on. You can tell me anything. I'm here for you." It was starting to seem, to him anyway, that she was nervous. About what, though? ”I’m rather nervous about my first hunt. I just don’t think I have it in me to actually kill something. I I mean I know I should, I’m a lion after all. I just, oh, I really have no clue what I’m talking about….”Again, the king was blinking a few times. Were females always like this, nervous about their first hunt? After a few moments of thinking about it, he started to chuckle. It wasn't a chuckle that she should be ashamed of. He just figured all females were nervous about their first hunt, their first spill of blood. "No, no. You do know what you're talking about." His tone of voice wasn't mocking, it was rather low and soothing. Those emerald eyes watched the lioness' before him, and he gave her one of his best, reassuring lion grins. "Alright, if it makes you feel better, here's what we'll do. Don't hunt until you feel sure enough you do. Take your time with it; and if any of the other lioness give you a problem, come to me about it. All of them got nervous at first, too." He nodded along with his words before continuing. "Believe me. They thought they couldn't kill anything at all either. However, once they were sure they could do it, they did it. Now they figure, "Hey, you gotta do what you gotta do." Just go ask some of them for advice. They'll tell you."Again, he gave her one of his best reassuring grins.

Yeah, no surprise he didn’t realize she was up there. She wasn’t one to stand out in a crowd after all. At least he did see her when she needed to talk to him though. And he apologized for sneaking up on her, which helped to calm her down some. Still, Nyarai still acted rather polite, and had trouble keeping consistent eye contact with him as they talked.
The way he talked reminded her a lot of how a father would. Strong, forceful, yet at the same time trying to be reassuring and comforting. It seemed a bit weird to Nyarai to be talking to a king like this, but then again the kings of the Pridelands had always worked hard to be kind and gentle with the lionesses. That was probably what made them strong, and why Scar’s reign ended so quickly.
When he started to chuckle, Nyarai thought she had just embarrassed herself beyond belief. It was probably one of her deepest fears in this situation, outside of active anger at her for it. She was about to slink off when he started talking, saying she did know what she was talking about. Turning around, she looked at him a bit confused and listened as he kept going.
She was rather comforted by the thought that she didn’t have to hunt till she felt sure about it, but that was a double-edged sword. The problem was she didn’t feel sure, and unless she actually went out there and did she probably never would. And even with the addition she could come to him should the lionesses bother her about it (which they probably would), she didn’t want to take it.
”No, I really would like to try and do it.” she replied, leaving out a part about not wanting special treatment. Even if he did it for all of them, the fact that he gave it to her himself made Nyarai feel as if it was.
Kovu then suggested that she find some of the lioness and try and ask them for advice. Though as far as Nyarai knew, they were out hunting like they were supposed to. It would be hard to try and talk to them unless she went out searching for them. Maybe one or two of the older ones stayed behind, but that would probably be it.
”Do you know where any of them are?” she asked Kovu, seeing if he could turn her in the right direction to find one.

► Hunter of the Day ◄***Vitani slunk out of the shadows and licked a forepaw. "I'm a hunter," she stated, looking curiously at Nyarai. A lioness that didn't want to hunt? Well, we'd see about that. She padded forward and nudged her. "Come on, Nyarai," she said, whiskers twitching. This would be fun. "I'll show you all there is to know about hunting." She flicked her tail, leading away in the direction of the hunting grounds. She'd show her all there was to know; and then she'd be a hunter fit for the pride.***
